While the restaurant opening pace slowed a bit in 2019, there were still plenty of gorgeous new rooms to luxuriate in. From a powder pink, flower-packed cafe, to the stately booths of an old school steak restaurant, these were the restaurants that had gave us design crushes this year.
P.S. Steak
The Eater Award winner for design was a collaboration between the restaurant’s owners, Jester Concepts, and well-known local firm Shea Design. The interior marries the old school elegance of the historic condo building where the restaurant is located with a modern, polished feel. The front bar is open, airy, welcoming. The back is intimate, stately, cozy, and a perfect backdrop for all-out steak dinners.
Thirty-Six Cafe
It’s modest coffee shop on Grand Avenue with soufflé pancakes and gold leaf decorated lattes, but the blush color and cascading flowers are utterly charming. Take the full tour here.
Prieto
Chef Alejandro Castillon took over this restaurant on the corner of Lake Street and Lyndale Avenue and transformed it into a taco and cocktail hotspot in a neighborhood flush with taco and cocktail options. The lively interior includes a back room with a wall painted to look like a tacos stand, a vibrant bar, and a back wall statement piece made from Mexican toys.
Estelle
This new restaurant has been packed since opening in a quiet St. Paul neighborhood. Chef and owner Jason Hanson and his design team needed to marry two separate rooms into one cohesive restaurant. The back bar is intimate and an ideal place to plow through small plate snacks with friends while indulging in the gorgeous cocktails. The front restaurant is fit for families, but also intimate enough for a romance.
Graze Provisions + Libations
The North Loop’s food hall included a gorgeous patio space that was only open for just a bit before the cold weather descended. Inside, however, the room has been packed with food options and people. The space has been hosting private events and ball game viewings as well as working as a day time meeting space. It’s a multi-use space that functions beautifully for the neighborhood.
Mucci’s Uptown
From bagels to pizza, this restaurant had to make the dramatic change from bright white and subway tile, to intimate reds and Italian bistro feel. The atmosphere worked, and Uptown’s new pasta and pizza spot has been buzzing ever since.
Pig Ate My Pizza
Robbinsdale’s favorite pizza place has expanded into a brewery and somehow shoehorned a screened in porch into an indoor space. The new Pig Ate My Pizza takes over the former home of Travail, and the party vibes remain, although the room is much different. The full bar is even more approachable and there are all kinds of spots to perch and munch pizzas, order bar snacks, or experience an entire tasting menu.
The entire Travail residency in Minneapolis has been a feat. The restaurant interior changes with each pop-up hosted here, but Homage, which in part paid service to Auriga, the restaurant that used to reside at this address, might have been the most beautiful. Walls dripping in flowers, era-appropriate art on the walls, and 90s jams playing softly in the background. It was gorgeous while it lasted.
