As the end of the year approaches, we're already hungry for what's coming in 2020. Fast-growing metro Phoenix already has a growing slate of new restaurants lined up, from French-influenced dining in an elegant setting to an Asian-American supermarket with a massive fan following.
What can diners expect? A world-famous Japanese restaurant makes its Arizona debut at Scottsdale Fashion Square, a cocktail bar and restaurant inspired by Vietnam opens in central Phoenix, and the team behind the ever-popular Ocotillo seems to have a new project in the works with "Aztec-inspired dishes."
Here are 9 of the most anticipated restaurant and bar openings in metro Phoenix for 2020:
Belly Kitchen and Bar
When: Spring 2020.
Where: 4971 N. 7th Avenue, Phoenix.
What: A cocktail bar and restaurant with a Vietnamese influence is set to open in central Phoenix's Melrose neighborhood. Belly is the first concept out of Instrumental Hospitality Group, which includes former Welcome Diner chef Michael Babcock, The Arizona Republic reported earlier this year.
Inspired by a weeks-long trip in Southeast Asia, Babcock said the concept will focus on food and beverage traditional to Vietnam.
Chantico
When: Spring 2020.
Where: 1041 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix.
What: The team behind Ocotillo Restaurant and Starlite BBQ has an new Mexican restaurant planned for midtown Phoenix. The Aztec-inspired concept will draw on the diversity of ingredients found throughout Mexico, offering a menu that is both traditional and modern, according to a press release.
Expect seafood from the Sea of Cortez, beef from Sonora, tropical ingredients from the Yucatan and heirloom varieties of corn from all over Mexico.
The restaurant will feature an outdoor terrace, private rooms, bar and lounge. It will be open for dinner, lunch, brunch and happy hour.
Christopher's at The Wrigley
When: September 2020.
Where: Wrigley Mansion, 2501 E. Telawa Trail, Phoenix.
What: This work-in-progress from James Beard Award-winning chef Christopher Gross will offer an upscale dining experience with French-inspired cuisine at Wrigley Mansion.
The elegant and intimate setting will seat about 26 people and offer an earthy, multicourse tasting menu for dinner, Gross said. A wood hearth will be one of the restaurant's focal points, he added. Later down the line, Christopher's will open for lunch with a simple three-course menu, featuring items such as mussels cooked over a wood-burning grill and pate of duck or rabbit, Gross plans.
In this "no tipping restaurant," cooks will also double as servers. Gross said the move will allow him to pay his cooks more, while closing the divide between front of house and back of house.
H Mart
When: 2020.
Where: 1919 W. Main Street, Mesa.
What: H Mart is set to arrive in the East Valley to much fanfare. The popular supermarket will open in Mesa's Asian food hub, selling Asian and American groceries including fresh produce, meat, seafood and ready-to-cook items.
The chain first started in New York in 1982 and his since expanded to more than than 90 stores in the U.S., according to a press release. The one in Mesa will be the first H Mart in Arizona. While a "Coming Soon" sign has been spotted on the building, a spokesperson for H Mart confirmed the company does not have a precise opening date yet.

The restaurant will be housed in a bungalow built in 1919, next to Cambria Hotel. Chef Ryan Pitt, formerly of Citizen Public House and The Gladly, will lead the kitchen, drawing from classic French cooking methods and globally-inspired cuisine, according to a restaurant spokesperson.
Coup de Grâce, a hidden cocktail bar inspired by 1970s Paris, will also stay open later than the restaurant and offer a rotating menu of six cocktails.
Nobu
When: Early 2020.

The new Tacos Chiwas will be located just east of that building and offer an expanded menu, including a beverage list that may include draft beer, margaritas and micheladas.

Where: 6952 E. Main Street, Scottsdale.
What: Chef Gio Osso announced on Instagram that Virtu, his award-winning restaurant in Scottsdale, will expand with a pizzeria. He will take over the location of Grazie restaurant after it closes in December 2019.
Osso said he was drawn to building in part because of its proximity to Virtu and the "beautifully seasoned wood-burning oven." Grazie was also the first place he worked at when he moved to the Valley 17 years ago.
The menu will feature different styles of pizza and an 'Octopus of the Day,' he told The Republic. In preparation, Osso has been undergoing training to make traditional Neopolitan-style pizza.
