Neir’s Tavern, the self-proclaimed oldest bar in New York City, will avoid closing after the owner of the Queens establishment and its landlord reached a last-minute deal on Friday, according to city officials.
Owner Loycent Gordon, who bought the Woodhaven, Queens, pub in 2009, said earlier this week that he would have to shutter for good on Sunday because of rising rents. The closing of the bar, which was featured in the movie “Goodfellas,” had customers crying in their drinks and local elected officials vowing to intercede.
“Every day I pray I would find a way to dedicate more time to overcome these challenges until yesterday I had to face the truth,” Mr. Gordon said in an email sent to friends and customers on Thursday.
“Neir’s Tavern is losing money and I don’t have the time to help to overcome it.”
On Friday evening, Mr. Gordon and the building’s owner negotiated a new five-year lease, according to City Councilman Robert Holden, a Democrat who represents the area. The two sides also had help from Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Queens Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Holden said.
Mr. Gordon, who is also a New York City firefighter, called Mr. de Blasio’s weekly radio show Friday morning to ask for help. The mayor, a Democrat, said in response that he would find a way.
On Friday evening, the mayor issued a statement, without offering any details: “New York City’s small businesses are what make this city so special, and as the city’s oldest bar, Neir’s leads the pack. I’m proud to have helped keep the doors open. Cheers to another 190 years!”
Neir’s Tavern opened in 1829 near the former Union Course racetrack and served drinks under multiple names, including the Blue Pump Room and Old Abbey, according to the bar’s website.
