A West Deering couple reopened the space occupied by the former Riverhouse Café in Greenfield as the Hungry Goats Eatery in December. The reopening was greeted enthusiastically by locals, who had been without a downtown restaurant since the Riverhouse Café closed in 2018.

“I think it's a great thing for Greenfield,” Selectman Robert Marshall said. “People in town are happy to see it there.” He said he himself hadn’t had the privilege of dining there yet, but looks forward to patronizing it soon.

The restaurant has received high enthusiasm and praise on its Facebook page, which advertises special menu items and changes in hours as the new establishment gains traction.

June and Duane Holm opened The Hungry Goats Eatery on Dec. 9. The Holms run Dollar Shy Farm in West Deering. June previously ran the restaurant associated with the American Legion in Hillsborough, and said she’d applied a similar local focus to the menu. She said the restaurant will specialize in farm fresh and locally grown, locally made foods, and anticipates sourcing local jams, maple syrup, as well as local produce once gardens pick back up in the spring.

Holm said she would like to eventually include dishes featuring milk and cheese from her 30 goats, which gave the restaurant its name.

Holm said she and her husband had been looking for a space to open a restaurant and store when she looked into the Greenfield location.

“Everyone I talked to said Greenfield was looking for it,” she said, and the location and space appealed to her.

The restaurant will be open for breakfast on New Year's Eve from 7 a.m. to noon, and open on New Year’s Day from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The restaurant is closed on Mondays. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and dinner from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
