Joe Maddon's Wrigleyville restaurant closes - NBCSports.com

With the year coming to a close, NBC Sports Chicago is looking back on the top moments from the 2019 Cubs season.

Cubs top prospect Nico Hoerner went back home to California after his Double-A season with the Tennessee Smokies ended on Sept. 2. The 22-year-old was set to have a few weeks off before heading to the Arizona Fall League later that month.

Then, the Cubs came calling.

With both Javier Báez (fractured thumb) and Addison Russell (concussion) on the mend, the Cubs had no true shortstop healthy. In response, they promoted Hoerner to The Show on Sept. 9, a move which otherwise wouldn’t have come until sometime in 2020.

It was fair to wonder how much Hoerner would contribute at the plate following his promotion. He fared well in Double-A last season (.284 average, .344 OBP) but missed two months with a wrist injury, playing 70 games. He also missed most of 2018 with injury and has played in just 89 minors games since the Cubs drafted him 24th overall in 2018.

Then-Cubs manager Joe Maddon inserted the rookie into the starting lineup immediately, and Hoerner didn’t disappoint. He went 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs on Sept. 9 against San Diego, also having a busy night defensively at shortstop.

Hoerner’s high-contact rate is one of his top offensive attributes and it was on display immediately. He fought off a tough pitch in his first at-bat, dumping a down-and-away breaking ball into right field for his first career hit. He added a smash down the left field line for a two-run triple and a line drive single into center field for two more RBIs.

Although his promotion didn’t culminate in a postseason berth, Hoerner left a great impression on the Cubs. He hit .282 with 17 RBIs in 20 games, demonstrating valuable defensive versatility by playing shortstop, second base and center field.

The sample size is small, but Hoerner proved he should be a big part of the Cubs next season. It all started with an unexpected debut in San Diego in the midst of a heated pennant race.

Watch the video above for a flashback at Hoerner’s MLB debut.

For New Year, Michigan restaurant server gets $2,020 tip - Fox News

A Michigan restaurant server will start the New Year on the right foot thanks to a generous, and very specific, tip: $2,020.

Danielle Franzoni told The Alpena News she received the tip for a $23 meal during a Sunday shift at The Thunder Bay River Restaurant in Alpena. The receipt said "Happy New Year. 2020 Tip Challenge."

“Things like this don’t happen to people like me,” Franzoni said.

The 31-year-old said she was living in a homeless shelter a year ago.

“They don’t know nothing about my story. They don’t know where I’ve come from. They don’t know how hard it’s been,” Franzoni said of the couple who left the tip. "They’re really just doing this out of the kindness of their heart."

She said she plans to use the money to reinstate her driver's license and build up her savings. Franzoni said she later paid it forward and left a $20.20 tip at another restaurant.

"That was my pay-it-forward," she said, adding: "I couldn’t do the other one," referring to tipping $2,020.

The 2019 Boston-area restaurant awards - The Boston Globe

Each year we recognize the standouts. Here are the people and places that had our attention in 2019.

Cuisine of the year: Italian

Italian cuisine is eternally popular, but this past year it inspired two of Boston’s buzziest restaurant openings: Fox & the Knife and Orfano. Fox & the Knife comes to us from chef Karen Akunowicz, who spent time living and working in Modena. Her festive little South Boston spot celebrates the cuisine of that region, with pasta a particular strength. (Don’t miss the earthy and ethereal tagliatelle bolognese.) Chef Tiffani Faison’s Big Heart Hospitality is behind Orfano, a glam and handsome riff on Italian-Americana. Martini cart! Nonna’s garlic bread wrapped in red-and-white-checked paper! Lobster bucatini! These were the restaurants that grabbed the most attention, but plenty of other new Italian spots made waves, too, from Tony & Elaine’s and Table by Jen Royle in the North End to Basile Fine Italian Kitchen in Bay Village and Chef Ronsky’s in Chestnut Hill.

Restaurateurs of the year: Big Heart Hospitality

Faison’s restaurant group continues to grow, in the process remaking the Fenway neighborhood. In 2018, building on the success of barbecue joint Sweet Cheeks and the Southeast Asian-inspired Tiger Mama, Big Heart added Fool’s Errand, a quirky snack bar for grown-ups. And this year, Orfano showed the group’s more-polished side, albeit presented with a cheeky sense of humor. Soon they’ll take on downtown, too, with Tenderoni’s Pizza and seafood-focused Divebar in food hall High Street Place.

Concept of the year: Tanám

Chef Ellie Tiglao brought us the Filipino restaurant we've been waiting for with Tanám, featuring what she calls “narrative cuisine”: Meals here aim to tell a story about food, culture, and identity. Tiglao previously hosted a pop-up series called Pamangan. As part of Olio Culinary Collective, a worker-owned business largely run by women of color, she turned it into the Bow Market brick-and-mortar, an intimate space that encourages interaction. You will get to know your tablemates and staffers over themed, multicourse meals as well as utensil-free kamayan feasts spread out on banana leaves.

Best sequel: Gustazo Cuban Kitchen & Bar

Patricia Estorino and Adolfo De La Vega opened the first Gustazo in 2011, moving it from Belmont to Waltham a few years later. This year they opened a second branch of the Cuban restaurant near Porter Square in Cambridge. The food and the mood are warm and festive. Enjoy tapas such as ceviche, empanadas, and oxtail tacos and classic main dishes (ropa vieja, the seafood stew mariscada) while sipping daiquiris and mango mojitos. The drinks are as good as the food, the staff is friendly, and the space is stylish. It’s the kind of place that just makes you feel good.

Rebel of the year: Lauren Friel

Lauren Friel opened wine bar Rebel Rebel at the end of 2018, pouring an ever-changing, always intriguing selection that got the attention of local oenophiles. Then she used her bar to take a stand. When Alabama passed a near-total abortion ban in May, she decided Rebel Rebel would donate 100 percent of rosé sold through Memorial Day to the Yellowhammer Fund, which provides financial support to women seeking abortions at one of that state’s clinics. Distributors rallied, donating wine. A hashtag was born, #RoseforResistance. And a GoFundMe campaign raised more than $32,000, exceeding its goal.

Most welcome addition to Logan: Shojo

When Shojo opened at Terminal C, flight delays and long layovers became more bearable. There’s not a lot of ambiance, but the menu makes up for that with dumplings, duck fat fries, all-day congee, and egg puff waffles with fried chicken. The bacon and egg bao with “kimcheese” may become your new preflight tradition.

Happiest return (tie): Buttonwood and the Sky Bar

Buttonwood: Born 2018, died 2018, reborn 2019. One of Newton’s best new neighborhood restaurants could have fallen victim to a fire, but it reopened nearly a year later, as good as ever. The staff barely changed, and the kitchen still serves up pizza shop Greek salads, plump moules frites, roast chicken, and a worthy cheeseburger. Plus, now there’s Sunday brunch.

Buttonwood, 51 Lincoln St., Newton Highlands, 617-928-5771, www.buttonwoodnewton.com

We also almost lost the Sky Bar, that original New England candy bar with four differently filled compartments: caramel, vanilla, peanut, and fudge. When maker Necco closed in 2018, it sold all its brands at auction. Most went to candy companies. But local entrepreneur Louise Mawhinney was the one to save the Sky Bar. The former biotech executive runs gourmet gift shop Duck Soup in Sudbury, which now features a compact adjacent factory producing the confection. After testing all the recipes, Mawhinney chose one from the 1970s. The Sky Bar tastes better than it has in years.

Dish of the year: Popeyes’ fried chicken sandwich

Apologies to all the chefs working hard to create clever, delicious, beautifully plated food made with perfect technique. The dish of the year was a mass-produced fast-food sandwich we stood in line for, joked about, fought over, and, if we were lucky, finally savored. Popeyes, that is one excellent fried chicken sandwich. The classic take would have been enough, with its craggy golden batter, slick of mayonnaise, and tart pickle slices. And then you gave us the spicy version too. We’re not worthy.

Most admirable debut: Kamakura

At the tail end of 2018, a restaurant opened downtown, specializing in the artful, multicourse Japanese cuisine known as kaiseki. Chef Youji Iwakura named his first restaurant after his hometown of Kamakura. It was sincere, ambitious, and expensive, with multiple floors and a beautiful view. Not everything was perfect, but much of the food was wonderful, and there was a strong sake program to support it. Whether taking a serene bento lunch break or going all out with pristine sashimi and robata-grilled wagyu, it was always exciting to eat here, because Kamakura is like nothing else in the city.

Best success story: Tawakal Halal Cafe

After closing in 2011, East Boston Somali restaurant Tawakal Halal Cafe reopened in a new location last October. Yahya Noor and his family and friends run the place, serving fragrantly spiced sambusas, samosa-like turnovers filled with ground beef; biryani with slow-cooked goat; chicken stew with coconut milk grits; and more. The food is as delicious as the restaurant is tiny and unassuming. People took notice, including Bon Appetit, which included it among 50 nominees for the magazine’s annual “Hot 10” list of best new restaurants in the country. Head there for the Tawakal plate, strips of chapati cooked in spiced tomato sauce with chickpeas and spinach; a cup of chai-like shaah; and the zippy house hot sauce and you will understand why.

Best street on which to eat double dinner: Mass. Ave. in the South End

At the corner of Mass. Ave. and Tremont, you'll find Mida, the cozy and welcoming restaurant that chef-owner Douglass Williams has steadily turned into one of the city's most delicious places for Italian food. At the corner of Mass. Ave. and Washington, you'll find Bar Lyon, the neighborhood-y bistro from Jamie Mammano and crew (Mistral, Sorellina, Ostra, etc.), serving up great French fare and equally great hospitality. That two such delightful restaurants should exist so close to each other (about a five-minute walk), be decently priced, and offer exceptionally convivial bar scenes seems almost too good to be true. It would be wrong not to take advantage of one, or the other, or even both on the same night, if you're so inclined.

Happy 2020: Server at Michigan restaurant gets $2020 tip - Minneapolis Star Tribune

ALPENA, Mich. — The restaurant bill was $23. But the tip at a small-town restaurant in Michigan was much larger: $2,020.

"Things like this don't happen to people like me," server Danielle Franzoni told The Alpena News.

Franzoni, 31, got the tip while working Sunday at Thunder Bay River Restaurant in Alpena. The credit card receipt said "Happy New Year. 2020 Tip Challenge."

Franzoni, a single mother, couldn't believe the number, but her manager assured her the tip was legitimate.

She said she was living in a homeless shelter a year ago. Franzoni plans to use the money to reinstate her driver's license and build savings.

"They don't know nothing about my story. They don't know where I've come from. They don't know how hard it's been," Franzoni said of the couple who left the tip. "They're really just doing this out of the kindness of their heart."

Franzoni later went to a restaurant and left a $20.20 tip.

"That was my pay-it-forward," she said, smiling. "I couldn't do the other one."

The last great smart-display deal of 2019: JBL's Link View for $95 - CNET

jbl-link-view-product-photos-2

The JBL Link View features an 8-inch touchscreen, Google Assistant and great, bass-heavy sound.

Tyler Lizenby/CNET

Farewell, 2019! And thank you, readers, for joining me on this nonstop deal adventure. I hope you have an enjoyable celebration this evening and a safe, happy, healthy new year. On to the roaring '20s we go!

Before we flip the calendars, however, let's enjoy one last smart-display deal. And it's a doozy: For a limited time, and while supplies last, Best Buy has the JBL Link View with Google Assistant for $94.99, which I believe is the lowest price to date. It lists for $300, though it originally sold for $250 via JBL proper.

The Link View mashes together a robust wireless speaker and an 8-inch touchscreen. The latter incorporates Google Assistant, meaning you can issue all the usual voice commands for things like weather, music, smart-home controls and so on.

Sound familiar? Yep, Amazon's Echo Show 8 is a close competitor in terms of features and price (it's currently $100, though often on sale for less). While that model may be a bit more streamlined in its design, however, there's no question the Link View has the bigger, better speakers. In fact, in his JBL Link View review, CNET's Andrew Gebhart wrote that it has "the best sound quality of all current smart displays equipped with Google Assistant." (Granted, the Echo Show 8 uses Alexa, but you can tell just from looking that the Link View has more speaker meat to it.)

The Link View also offers built-in Google Chromecast, helpful if you want to incorporate it into a whole-home sound system, and it's a straight-up Bluetooth speaker as well.

There's a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls, with a manual shutter for blocking the camera and a switch that mutes the microphone.

CNET's aforementioned review awarded the Link View 8.3 out of 10 and dubbed it "the Google Assistant smart display with the best sound quality." Over at Best Buy, some 86 buyers collectively rated it 4.8 stars out of 5.

Even if you aren't that interested in the video features, $95 for a big, boisterous smart speaker is a darn good deal.

Your thoughts?

Now playing: Watch this: JBL Link View gives Google Assistant a smart screen with...

2:58

This Bluetooth 5.0 speaker offers 24-hour playtime for just $9.99

Speaking of speakers, let's get a little smaller, a lot more portable and way, way cheaper: For a limited time, and while supplies last, the Vtin R4 portable Bluetooth speaker is just $9.99 when you clip the on-page $5-off coupon and apply promo code S37W2CE2 at checkout. It's available in blue, black and red; I tested the code only with the blue model, but I believe it'll work with the others as well.

vtin-r4-speaker

How can this thing be just $10? Don't ask questions.

Vtin

This is sold by VicTsing Direct; if you see a different seller listed, it might be because that vendor is sold out. If that's the case, you probably won't see the coupon, and the promo code won't work.

This is the speaker you put in the bathroom so you can listen to music in the shower. Or in the garage for podcasts while you do... garage things. Or in your beach/pool/park bag. You get the idea. It's IPX5-rated for water resistance (meaning it's not waterproof, despite what it says in the product headline) and promises an impressive 24 hours of playtime on a charge.

It also has a microphone for speakerphone calls and an also-impressive 24-month warranty. There's even a slot for popping in a microSD card. OK, but... sound quality? I don't know, because I haven't tried this one. But nearly 700 buyers collectively rated the speaker 4.5 stars out of 5, and both Fakespot and ReviewMeta indicate most of those ratings are valid. My take: Keep your expectations in check and you're likely to be amazed at what your $10 bought you.

Ending 102-year run, No Name Restaurant on South Boston’s Fish Pier to close its doors - MassLive.com

No Name Restaurant, a classic seafood establishment on South Boston’s Fish Pier and the oldest continuously family-run restaurant in the city, will close its doors after more than a century of service.

The two-story restaurant opened 102 years ago, initially as a seafood stand “serving fresh catches to fisherman undocking from a long day,” according to the business’s website. No Name eventually expanded from its original storefront to a restaurant in the 1980s.

“After over 100 years, we had to make the difficult decision to close the No Name Restaurant,” the restaurant said in a Facebook post. “We want to thank our generations of customers for all the years of loyal patronage, and for helping make the No Name a landmark location.”

The restaurant sits on the edge of Boston Harbor and cooks classic seafood dishes, including a seafood platter, lobster sauté and lobster roll.

Nick Contos, a Greek immigrant, created No Name in 1917 shortly before the outbreak of World War I and a year before Babe Ruth was traded to the New York Yankees, according to No Name’s website. Since its start, the restaurant has remained nameless.

“Nick didn’t name the place, and that name stuck. ‘If it works, leave it alone,’ he said. Since then, the NoName has delivered fresh catches to folks like you who have come from all over the world to enjoy a memorable meal,” the restaurant’s website says.

No Name is one of a slew of older establishments, including Anthony’s Pier 4, that have closed recently near Boston’s seaport, an area that has experienced dramatic growth in recent years.

Luxury apartments and restaurants as well as insurance and pharmaceutical companies have set up shop in the Seaport District in the past two years. General Electric also moved their headquarters to the neighborhood in 2017, and city officials broke ground earlier this year on new Amazon offices expected to open in 2021.

No Name was struggling financially and had filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, The Boston Globe reported.

“To our employees, many of whom have been with us for decades, we cannot thank you enough -- we thank you for your tireless dedication and hard working service,” the restaurant said in its Facebook post. “It has been an honor to be part of your celebrations and your everyday lives for so many years.”

Commodities Fall on Last Day of Strong December - Wall Street Journal

Commodities fell in quiet trading Tuesday but were still on track to close out December with outsize gains, highlighting how a brighter view of the world economy is supporting riskier investments entering 2020.

U.S. crude-oil futures slid 1.4% to $60.81 a barrel Tuesday but were still up more than 10% for the month and about 34% for the year, heading for their largest annual gain since 2016. Brent crude, the global gauge of oil prices, dropped 1.3% to $65.83 on the final trading day of the year but has also rebounded after tumbling in the last few months of 2018.

Limited production by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies including Russia and hopes that a U.S.-China trade deal will support fuel consumption have helped oil stabilize late in the year.

Optimism about demand for commodities has also supported copper, a metal critical to manufacturing and construction, late in the year. Most-active futures fell 1% to $2.8060 a pound Tuesday but are still up roughly 5.5% in December after trading sideways for much of the year.

Copper’s rally in particular highlights hopes that the Chinese economy will pick up steam following an initial U.S.-China trade pact. China accounts for roughly half of global consumption of the industrial metal.

Figures Tuesday showed that easing trade tensions lifted demand for Chinese goods and boosted factory production in December. The official manufacturing purchasing managers index remained unchanged at 50.2 in December, indicating an expansion of activity for the second straight month after showing contractions for six months.

President Trump also said on Twitter that he will sign the “phase one” trade accord with China on Jan. 15 at the White House before traveling to Beijing for the next phase of talks.

Hedge funds and other speculative investors are anticipating more stability for commodities ahead. They pushed net bets on higher U.S. crude prices to their highest level in nearly six months during the week ended Dec. 24, Commodity Futures Trading Commission data show.

Net bullish bets on copper by speculators that week stood at their highest point since mid-March.

Analysts have cautioned against reading too much into market moves the last few weeks of the year because of thinner holiday trading. Many are awaiting more data points to gauge the trajectory of economic growth early next year, with figures on December hiring and activity in the services sector on tap next week.

Malčanski berberin spremio pakleni plan - Alo!

Malčanski berberin spremio pakleni plan - Alo!

AUTOR: DATUM I VREME: 31.12.2019. 16:54 - 31.12.2019. 17:00

New poke restaurant Little Koi opens in Saginaw area - MLive.com

SAGINAW, MI — A new Green Acres Plaza restaurant serves up “deconstructed sushi” in the form of build-your-own poke bowls.

Little Koi held a soft opening on Friday, Dec. 13, and now has full hours. The restaurant has already started bringing in some repeat customers, said Lin Fan, manager and part-owner.

Little Koi is located at 4632 State St. in the left-most storefront of the building containing Ollie’s Bargain Outlet.

Customers choose between three types of rice or salad greens as a base, then add seafood or tofu as proteins. Different proteins can be mixed and matched, with the number of “scoops” determined by the size of the meal you order. The bowls can then be personalized with many options, including 13 sauces and 17 toppings.

Fan’s favorite options? Salmon and brown rice with eel sauce, topped with masago, wasabi, cucumber, edamame and spicy crab meat, he said.

For those who prefer hot meals, the restaurant also serves stir fry-esque rice-and-noodle dishes with cooked-to-order meats, Fan said.

Fan founded the Saginaw restaurant China City in 2000, and hopes to stand out with a focus on high-quality ingredients at the new restaurant, he said.

“We wanted to try the simple, clean and open-kitchen environment, so people can see how their food is being prepared,” Fan said.

"Monika će Novu godinu dočekati sa mamom u bolničkoj sobi, a ja sam joj već odneo poklone": Robert Karimanović i dalje je potresen sudbinom svoje devojčice - Вечерње Новости
