Rent increases and other operational obstacles prompted the unfortunate end of year shutter of Gaya Gaya, chef DJ Tangalin’s first solo restaurant serving modern Filipino food. The former Bivouac Ciderworks chef, who took over the Miramar space last spring, has said that he intends to open several eateries dedicated to Filipino cuisine. In a Facebook post from New Year’s Day, Tangalin indicates that he’s planning future pop-ups while on the lookout for a new home.
The close of 2019 also saw the sad shutter of Maestoso, which debuted at The Hub in Hillcrest in May 2018. Chef/owner Marco Maestoso and partner Dalila Ercolani arrived in San Diego by way of Rome, where the chef operated his own fine dining restaurant, and New York City, where the couple ran an acclaimed supper club. Maestoso featured fresh pasta and Roman-style flatbread as well as a variety of rotating dishes served via tableside carts. Eater’s hearing that landlord issues may have come into play in the closure, but the good news is that Maestoso may be reopening in a new neighborhood.
Downtown restaurant McCormick & Schmick’s shuttered suddenly this week, with some employees only being notified after showing up for work on New Year’s Day, according to NBC7. The steak and seafood restaurant had been in operation since the Omni San Diego Hotel opened in 2004. The hotel has reportedly rebranded the space as a bar and lounge called West Coast Social, with a larger revamp to follow.
And another longtime steakhouse has closed up shop in La Jolla. The co-owner of Donovan’s which relocated to Prospect Street in 2015 after 15 years in the UTC area, told the U-T that “the high cost of doing business in California” spurred the decision to shutter. The brand continues to operate a location in the Gaslamp.
