How to holiday shop last-minute in Sarasota - Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Big-box retailers like Amazon and Target have set up ways to make sure shoppers get what they need up until the last minute.

It’s the Sunday before Christmas, which means you have about three days to finish your shopping before you start to look impolite.

Whether you’re a reliably last-minute shopper, a hardcore planner who let something fall by the wayside or somewhere in between, the nation’s most prominent big-box retail companies are doing their best to make it easy for you to shop up until the very last second.

Here’s my roundup of last-minute shopping information at some stores that have a local presence. There’s no shame in shopping late, people. I’m right there with you.

At Target, customers can order items online for in-store pickup or Drive Up up to two hours before stores close on Christmas Eve. Most of those orders will be ready within an hour.

For same-day delivery, which is available up until Christmas Eve, orders have to be placed on Target.com or the Target app during normal business hours. Delivery is free if you’re a Shipt member, or $9.99 per order if you’re not, and it’s typically available up to one hour before store closing.

It’s a little too late to order everything online for free shipping in time for Christmas — that had to be done by Friday, Dec. 20 — but customers can still choose free shipping on items tagged as “guaranteed by Christmas” until Tuesday, Dec. 24.

At Best Buy, last-minute shoppers can shop online at BestBuy.com up until 5 p.m. Christmas Eve and still have gifts to put under the tree just in time. Free next-day delivery on qualifying products, based on availability and what time the order is placed, is available until Dec. 23 at 8 p.m.

Same-day delivery isn’t available in my Manatee County ZIP code, but if you’re a snowbird and you’ve gone home to Boston or Chicago for Christmas, you might have better luck. You can check to see if same-day delivery is accessible to you on Best Buy’s website.

If you’d rather shop the old fashioned way, Best Buy stores are open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, and closed Christmas Day.

But maybe you don’t want to shop the old fashioned way, and figure the holidays are as good of a time as any to make use of your Amazon Prime membership. In that case, you better hurry up because you have until today (Sunday, Dec. 22) to order tens of millions of items that will arrive in time for Christmas.

Dec. 23 is the last day for one-day delivery on more than 10 million items from coast to coast, and on Christmas Eve, same-day delivery is available for millions of items for Prime members in eligible areas on orders over $35 placed by 9:30 a.m. local time.

On Christmas Day, if you wake up and the fact that you forgot to buy for someone hits you harder than the hooves of a thousand reindeer, you can always give the gift of an Amazon Gift Card or a Prime membership. Nice.

Last but not least, there’s Walmart. The retailer is offering free next-day delivery without a membership fee on hundreds of thousands of eligible items, although some exclusions might apply during peak days.

Customers can work in-store with associates to find what they’re looking for through Walmart’s DotCom Store, which is now available in all Walmart Supercenters. Once you order something on the DotCom Store, it is either shipped directly to your house or to the nearest Walmart store for pickup.

The cut off for next-day delivery to receive items by Christmas Eve is 12 p.m. local time on Dec. 23, and customers can order items for two-day delivery by Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. and still receive them by Dec. 24. The cutoff for pickup today is 4 p.m. local time Dec. 23.

Time to shop may be running out, but there are still plenty of options. So just sit back, pour yourself a glass of eggnog, put items in your online shopping cart and let Santa come to you.
